On-page SEO is the layer where a page states what it is about — to a reader in the first three seconds, and to a search engine in the markup. In Japanese it is not a translation exercise: title length, heading phrasing and internal link text all behave differently when the writing system changes.

What usually goes wrong

Japanese titles get truncated in the results because the character budget is different. Headings translated from English no longer contain the terms Japanese users search for. Internal links say the Japanese equivalent of "click here", which tells a search engine nothing. Individually minor; together they cost a page the relevance it should have had.

Why Japanese pages need their own on-page rules

Japanese characters occupy roughly twice the display width of Latin ones, so a title that fits in English will be cut in Japanese. Japanese pages also tend to run longer and be scanned rather than read, which makes heading structure and in-page navigation carry more weight than they do on the English equivalent.

What we do

Title and meta description optimisation

Written to the Japanese display budget, carrying the target term and a reason to click rather than just the page name.

Heading structure and content hierarchy

One H1 per page and a genuine H2/H3 hierarchy that reflects the argument, so both readers and crawlers can follow a long Japanese page.

Internal linking and anchor text

Descriptive Japanese anchor text that passes topical relevance between pages instead of generic link labels.

Relevance and intent alignment

We check that each page actually answers the query it targets, and adjust the content where the match is partial.

What you receive

  • Optimised Japanese titles and meta descriptions for the priority pages
  • A heading structure recommendation for each page in scope
  • An internal linking plan with specific Japanese anchor text
  • Content adjustments where a page and its target query do not match
  • A template specification so new pages inherit the same rules

Who this is for

  • Companies with Japanese pages that rank just outside the visible positions
  • Sites where Japanese titles are truncated or duplicated
  • Teams that need a repeatable on-page standard for Japanese pages
  • Businesses whose Japanese content is good but structured for English

Frequently asked questions

There is no fixed character count, because Google truncates by pixel width. Japanese characters are roughly double-width, so a Japanese title generally has to be considerably shorter in characters than its English counterpart. We write to the display width rather than to a number.

It depends on the term. Some categories are searched in katakana, some in kanji, some in Latin letters, and the right answer comes from the keyword research rather than from a general rule.

Sometimes, particularly for pages already ranking on the edge of visibility. Where the gap is caused by content depth, technical problems or authority, on-page work helps but will not be sufficient on its own — we will tell you which case you are in.
